Instructions For Laying Artificial Turf

Preparing the ground

How to get started

Our artificial turf fits almost any surface and is extremely easy to maintain. With the right preparation, you can lay our artificial turf easily on a wide variety of surfaces.

1. Clearing the ground

In order to lay the artificial turf properly, you first need to clear the ground of all plants, weeds and debris.

Hints:

UV resistance: UV resistance is expressed in hours of sunshine (i.e. the number of hours in the year that the sun shines on the lawn).

2. Watering the ground

The cleared area needs to be watered. Then proceed with removing the top 10 cm of soil with a spade. In the next step, you will fill this free space with a drainage layer.

Drainage function:

Controlled water drainage is essential for artificial turf. This is why our products are designed to let water flow easily into the drainage layer.

3. Creating a drainage layer

It is important that water can drain off properly, otherwise puddles can form on the turf when it rains. Therefore, create a drainage layer before laying the lawn. This layer should consist of two parts:

1st layer (5 cm): gravel/split layer with 2-10mm grain size
2nd layer (5 cm): sand layer

4.) Compaction of subsoil

To ensure that the ground is stable, the drainage layers must be compacted with a vibrating plate. Afterwards, ensure absolute evenness by sliding an even board or an aluminium plate over the floor. This is very important as any unevenness will later result in an uneven turf.

Hints:

In order to keep the ground even, you can fix the stabilizing fleece with artificial turf anchors. These should be removed before laying the artificial turf rolls.

We also recommend that you roughly cut the artificial turf before laying it. This makes it easier to roll out the turf.

1. Rolling out the stabilizing fleece (recommended)

This step is optional but recommended. A fleece layer over the compacted subsoil will provide additional strength and stability. You can lay the fleece (or the elastic layer) directly on the finish formation. Important: The fleece should be laid in an absolutely smooth manner. Avoid waves, as any unevenness will be later visible on the lawn.

Our accessories (can be ordered online):

– Stabilizing fleece
– Utility knife
– Universal knife
– Trapezoidal blades
– Trolley

Before unrolling, you should know the angle from which you will later look at the turf. Roll the turf away from that viewing angle. This is because the turf will look richer when seen against the grain.

3. Doing the „fine tuning“

Once the lawn has been laid, cut it to size correctly. Cut only on the
back of the carpet, as you will have a straighter outcome and will damage the fibres less.

Hints:

Trees, bushes or flower beds can be preserved by making cuts into the artificial turf.

The best way to do the final cut is with the double-cut technique. This means that you place two strips with an overlap of 5-8 cm next to each other and cut vertically with a sharp utility knife. This will make the seam almost invisible.

4.) Rolling out the seam tape (optional)

If you are laying several strips of artificial turf, you should glue the strips together with seam tape. To do this, lift the sheets inwards (approx. 15 cm wide) and roll the seam tape onto the ground.

Our accessories (can be ordered online):

– Self-adhesive seam tape
– 2-component adhesive

5. Applying adhesive

Once the seam tape has been rolled out, apply artificial turf adhesive to it using a spatula. The adhesive consists of two components, which must be mixed according to the instructions.

6. Correctly joining the sheets

Now close the two strips again and press them evenly onto the adhesive. Do not walk on the turf for the next 12 hours.

7. Neatly closing the seam

To ensure the best possible transition between the sheets, you should rub the artificial turf against the grain with your fingers. This will make the seam almost disappear.

Hints:

The grain size of the quartz sand used for filling should be 0.4-0.6
mm. You will need about 2-4 kg sand per m. After strewing in the sand, you should brush it with a standard broom against the grain.

8. Anchoring down the turf

To ensure a firm hold even in strong weather conditions, the artificial turf should be firmly anchored. Use a hammer to knock a ground anchor into the ground every 50 cm.

Our accessories (can be ordered online):

– Hand-held spreader
– Anchor for artificial turf

9. Applying sand (optional)

Depending on the height and density of the artificial turf, it may be advisable to spread quartz or silicate sand on the artificial turf.

The weight of the sand increases the stability of the turf and makes it look more natural. In addition, the sand will make the grass fibres stand upright more easily.

After the sand has been spread, you should brush it with a standard broom against the grain.
